Adobe Photoshop 2022 (Version 23.4.1) * _SketchUp and Photoshop_ : This free online teaching program includes tutorials on using SketchUp and Photoshop in the same course. * _John Wiley and Sons, Inc_.: _Adobe Photoshop Elements 8 For Dummies_ (John Wiley and Sons, Inc.) is a good basic, one-volume book that doesn't assume you have Photoshop experience. * _Wiley Publishing_ : _Photoshop CS2 For Dummies_ by Scott Kelby, (Wiley) is a good intermediate level book for those who have made it to the advanced portion of Photoshop. ## Adding a Background The simplest way to start your image is by adding a background. When you select a layer to work on, you can see a preview of the default background, an image from the PSB (The Photoshop Background) folder or on the Backgrounds folder (from the web site). You can create a background by: * Choosing a picture, a color, a transparency, or a gradient. * Choosing a pattern (in which case you find where the pattern is and click a dot in the pattern to copy the pattern; see Figure 6-3). When you choose a gradient, you first have to choose the colors that you want to blend from the gradient. FIGURE 6-3: You can choose a single color to paint on the background or select a gradient to paint from one color to another. You can _rotate_ the layer containing your background by right-clicking (Control-clicking) the layer and then clicking Rotate Layer. Then, in the Transform window, rotate your layer by selecting Rotate from the Align menu and then selecting the degrees you want to rotate in the Transform window. You can hide the background by selecting View⇒Show/Hide Controls. The background is temporarily turned off and you can turn it back on by selecting View⇒Show/Hide Controls. If you want to add a border to a layer, you can choose View⇒Ruler; then click the Border icon in the Control panel and drag up or down on your canvas to make the width of the border you want. You can also create a dotted or dashed outline, as illustrated in Figure 6-4. FIGURE 6-4: Outlines give the layer the appearance of a frame. The program is exactly the same as the “Photoshop CS5” that we tested last week, which is a step up from Photoshop Elements 10. It is included with every copy of Windows 8, or you can download Photoshop Elements for free from their site. If you’re a bit of a novice and you’re looking to get into the graphics editing business, Photoshop Elements is a good option. The power of Photoshop The most basic editing options in Photoshop Elements is creating a new file and adding graphics, adjusting brightness, contrast and saturation, adding shadows, adding highlights, adding text, correcting white balance, creating layers, and much more. In fact, Photoshop Elements can edit almost any image you can think of. If you’re familiar with Photoshop, you can open a new document, insert images and objects, rotate, stretch and crop, resize, work with layers, transform and a myriad of other features that we’ll cover later. No other graphics editor can hold a candle to Photoshop. Photoshop offers over 100 image editing tools. You can even create your own or download them from the program. And of course, you can work with RAW files. Printing in Photoshop As you may already know, Photoshop is the poster child for printing. It is by far the best option for photo printing, especially if you have a good computer. You can print your photos directly from Photoshop without going through a photo printer. If your printer doesn’t have a PostScript driver (which has been the case for some time), you can still print. I don’t recommend printing in Elements because you have fewer options. You can work with 16x12-inch prints but no other sizes. You can also add a border to your print which is great if you’re printing a one-of-a-kind painting. Mosaic Art Mosaic art is possible with Photoshop. You can make your own from photos. Here is a sample of what it looks like. Did I mention there are 100 ways to create a photo mosaic? The mosaic tool can be used with any layer in Photoshop. Press “m” and a variety of options will appear.
